The order was simple, but so good. “Very light coffee with 2 sugars”, my Mother Gladys Escobosa would say. She loved coffee and quite frankly could have a cup anytime! Coffee has always been a grand staple in my home growing up. I remember visiting my grandmother’s house every Sunday and the first thing that came out of her kitchen was a huge Aluminum Coffee Maker. The Coffee Maker was filled to the brim and the aroma filled the whole apartment. It was the fuel that Abuela and the rest of the Adults in the family needed to get the conversation started. The conversations lasted for hours and ended with incredible commentary and memories.
They spoke very loudly over each other and sipped plenty of coffee. Everyone was in bliss as they laughed and cried about various experiences that all originated in the Dominican Republic. Perhaps this is why the aroma of my Grandma’s home was unforgettable and quite difficult to replicate.
Abuela’s house is where my love for coffee started. Unfortunately, due to her passing, those days do not exist anymore. I spent the majority of my adulthood trying to capture that aroma once again; that true scent of home. Unsuccessful in my pursuit, I settled for commercial coffee brands. Convincing myself that this was the best the Industry had to offer. Sadly, it never compared to Grandma. However, this changed once I was introduced to Cafe Carrizal.

This year I was invited to cover the NYC Coffee Festival and there was a booth that caught my eye immediately. Maybe it was seeing my country’s flag or just the warm and welcoming energy of the crew.

Whatever it was… It caused me to stop in my tracks. I had a sample and was captivated by the taste. This coffee transformed the sensations of my taste buds immediately. For a brief moment, I was back in Abuela’s living room. I heard laughter and remembered the stories shared. I was determined to connect with the brand, I had never tasted anything that created so much nostalgia in my soul.
Now back to the Coffee! Cafe Carrizal originated in the Dominican Republic and has been a staple in the community for years. This Coffee is cultivated in the central mountain region of the Dominican Republic. What I love most about Cafe Carrizal is that your purchase goes beyond supporting a brand you provide jobs in a rural community and contribute to education across the Dominican Republic.
Cafe Carrizal also takes care of their farmers who are responsible for making this Coffee so tasty! The brand focuses on establishing healthy relationships between farmers and the environment by providing health insurance and materials to farmers in the region.
The farmers who founded this brand are 4th and 5th generation descendants of coffee farmers Antonio Rodriguez and his son Arturo. (picture seen above) They founded the village of Carrizal in this region 120 years ago.
Today the family lives on the same plot of land where the first house in Carrizal was built. They have been involved in nonprofit work in their community since 2008. Since then, they have built aqueducts for clean water, organized trash pickups, held yearly environmental education camps for youth, built homes and donated food and medicine to members of their community.
5 percent of the the company’s profits go to an educational program that has been sponsored by the Dominican Minister of Education, with the goal of decreasing illiteracy across the country.
Although those days in Abuela’s living room are gone. I am so thankful for brands such as Cafe Carrizal that take my heart back to the better days Every cup I make fills my home with the same aroma from Abuela’s house and I feel her presence every time I take a sip! This is by far the best coffee I have ever tasted. Thank You Cafe Carrizal!
