I always had a deep appreciation for the African culture. I have been blessed to learn so much about this continent through various experiences with loved ones. When I first heard about photographer’s Ernest Danjuma Enebi release of WAKA WAKA I knew I had to grab a copy! I had the opportunity to attend the book launch earlier this month and it was amazing! Enebi, a New York–based Nigerian photographer takes readers on a trip to Africa with this dynamic photo book which documents his amazing travels to 15 African countries. The 400-page book brings together over 20 years of photography by Enebi.
Once you dive into the book you will be amazed at how far Enebi’s photographic lens will take you! I literally traveled to Lagos, Khartoum, Dakar, Botswana, Kenya, Senegal, and Uganda, in less than a day! It felt so good to see and feel Africa all from the comfort of my home. The book features over 300 photographs and essays that offer a fresh perspective on African life, style and culture. It is truly a visual poem about the most beautiful place on earth. I am so thankful that Ernest Danjuma Enebi has gifted us such an experience by sharing his art, sense of style and storytelling. WAKA WAKA is a must have in everyone’s collection.

I will be honest with you all I haven’t been keeping up with my beauty routines as of lately! Between work deadlines and adulting I have been bit busy. However, this past weekend I promised myself some TLC and I was intentional about incorporating my Oil Divine products in the process! I had the opportunity to review these oils, and I am excited to provide my full review on all these gems!

I have always taken great pride in my family. Growing up it was such an honor to experience the traditions that were established by the elders in the family. I am thankful to have the opportunity to create traditions as well! One of the many are my monthly lunch dates with my cousin Roger. This Month I decided to show up to our lunch date with a few vintage pieces. The top and skirt were purchased at my local Salvation Army. The boots were $2 at discount store in Brooklyn! My Outfit didn’t cost a fortune. Quite frankly I think this whole look in total might have been $20.00 or less. I guess the big stunner of the look was my Denim Telfar bag, that was pretty pricey!
The Southern Baptist Church Community is known for many great things. Great services and an atmosphere that provides an opportunity for individuals to strengthen their relationship with God. However, one cannot mention the Southern Baptist Church Community without mentioning the hats that the women of the Church proudly wear every Sunday. Church hat culture involves an unspoken code of etiquette. These hats have rules! They should not be wider than a woman’s shoulders or darker than her shoes
Wearing hats in Church grew in popularity during the Harlem Renaissance and throughout the early 20th century. These stylish hats served as status symbols for the growing Black middle class. During the Civil Rights Movement, women leaders often marched in their Church hats as a symbol of dignity.
With all that being said, imagine my excitement when my best friend called me to tell me she had inherited a family members collection of Church hats. Her name was Margaret (Margie for short) and she was a devout Christian woman who owned this emerald green hat. This indeed is a classic Church hat! I can only hope I wore this piece as good as Margie once did.
My name is Julissa and I am an active Thrifter aka I go to the Thrift Shop more than I should! I can spend hours in the Thrift Shop. The thrill of searching through used goods to find treasures is so fun. My days of thrifting usually start off with Prayer and and a really good Iced Coffee. During my most recent trip, I stumbled upon a very unique piece. From the moment I saw it I could not take my eyes off it. The tag read Berek. It was a sweater vest and for some reason it was very intriguing. The sweater vest was neon green with some form of a checkered print with what looked like sequined daisies. Whatever it was my mind conceptualized it as something grand. It was a piece I had to have.

I wore the piece for the first time to work and everyone gave me a compliment. These compliments motivated me to learn more about the brand. I did some research and saw some of their other designs and immediately became obsessed! What I find most impressive about the Berek brand is their unique use of color and fabrics. It is evident that Berek is intentional about their creations. These Designers are truly dedicated to their craft. To make a long story short lets just say the brand has been creating magic through fabric since the late 1970’s.
I was fortunate enough to connect with the Berek brand. I was invited to visit the Showroom in New York City. I was extremely excited and praying that I wouldn’t lose focus surrounded by all the dynamic colors. As soon as I walked in the warm staff greeted me. As I waited to meet the CEO I was told I could check out the Showroom. I gravitated towards the vintage sweaters. The sweaters were beautiful and vibrant. The designs and fabrics used were breathtaking, I had never seen anything like this before. You can tell the sweaters are stored with care. These sweaters were over 30 years old but looked fresh from a 2024 photo shoot.
Browsing through this Showroom was quite emotional. Sadly Designers today do not create clothes like this anymore. The world of Fashion has become so commercial. Walking through the Berek Showroom felt like home. This atmosphere reminded me of the reason I fell in love with Fashion in the first place. It is an authentic space where true style and originality exist.
The moment arrived and I had the opportunity to meet Jack Zyman, Berek’s CEO and creative mastermind. From the moment I met Mr. Zyman is was all great vibes and tons of laughter. We sat down and enjoyed Tea. I had a chance to hear the story behind the iconic brand and its humble beginnings. In 1978 Jack Zyman graduated from High School and the Fashion Industry was the last thing on his mind. It wasn’t until his Uncle (Who lived overseas after World War II) approached him about selling sweaters. He decided to go after the opportunity and began selling sweaters to several buyers throughout New York City. It was here that Berek started, and from this the birth of the most stylish pieces launched. Today Berek makes a wide range of products – including sweater knits, jackets, dresses, pajamas, activewear, T-shirts, accessories. This brand is definitely one of my favorites be sure to check them out!
